I am not going to change car because of Car Play. So, I wanted to find some solution.
I wanted to do the following…
- “Alexa, play classical music”
- “Alexa, read the latest news”
- “Alexa, play Podcast Science Friday”
- “Alexa, plot a way to office”
- “Alexa, play audiobook Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”
- …
I have tried to install this in my car.
- Amazon Echo Dot
- iPad
- Wifi Dongle
It does not work very well!
Reason:
- My car battery will not charge when the engine is off. Which means, all my equipment will be off. So, when I start engine, then, every single piece of equipment will be turn on.
- It takes time for the Wifi 4G LTE to turn on to provide Internet.
- It takes time for the Amazon Echo Dot to wait for the Internet and get authenticated, and turn on it self. It takes about 1-1.5 minutes.
- It works well, and it can get the songs from Spotify, and play it on Amazon Echo Dot speaker. (Eventually you want to hard wire it to your car Aux input). But iPad will not launch or show Spotify app. That is not good.
- So, you can imagine, every time when the car engine is off, then, everything off. I suppose I could put a second 12V battery behind the car boot, but it will not be elegant. hahaha…
So, as a result, I just keep my iPad mini in the car. Removed both the Wifi Dongle and the Amazon Echo Dot. Amazon Echo Dot now serve my toilet. So when I go toilet can have some music. hahaha
And it has helped me to catch a lot of Pokemon for the past one month craze. hahahaha
So, I know there are some head unit can support Car Play, but tempering with your car head unit, that is a no-no. So, I guess we have to wait for some new technology come up so that we can enjoy the technology in the car.
For now, nope!
